  • Critic Reviews of "The Beverly Hillbillies"

    Chicago Reader
    May 13, 2008

Four writers worked on the script, and they all should hang their heads in shame.

    Variety
    May 13, 2008

It's thin stuff, but the ingratiating naivete of the characters and the aw-shucks friendliness of the cast are disarming, and it becomes easy to just let this go down as a country tune with some moonshine on the side.

    Time Out
    June 24, 2006

Director Spheeris should be ashamed of herself.

    New York Times
    August 30, 2004

You'll hate yourself for enjoying this, but enjoy it you will.

    Rolling Stone
    May 12, 2001

Tomlin finds the humor and the heart in these hillbillies. The rest is just crude oil.

    Chicago Sun-Times
    January 01, 2000

Imagine the dumbest half-hour sitcom you've ever seen, spin it out to 93 minutes by making it even more thin and shallow, and you have this movie. It's appalling. It's not even really a good version of whatever it was that made the TV series appealing.

    Common Sense Media
    February 23, 2016

Unnecessary '90s remake has iffy humor, stereotypes.

    Empire Magazine
    May 13, 2008

With films like these, it's a wonder studios still think it's a good idea to regurgitate the past.

    Film4
    May 13, 2008

An endearing revival for TV's favourite hicks.

    TV Guide
    May 13, 2008

This big-screen expansion boasts one of the richest comic ensembles in recent memory, working well under Penelope Spheeris... About all that's missing is a point.

    Juicy Cerebellum
    September 07, 2005

    Unbearable.

    Reel Film Reviews
    December 19, 2004

It's fitting that The Beverly Hillbillies is based on a popular sitcom, given that the film feels perfectly suited to the small screen.
